Carpet yarn is formed by twisting two or more yarn strands together before tufting. The tighter the twist, the better a cut pile carpet will perform. Look closely as the individual yarn tufts. The twist should be easy to see, tight and near throughout. Twist level will usually be adequate if the tips of individual tufts are neat, tight and well defined, not loose and flared open. Then ask if the yearn has been heat-set. Heat-setting gives the yarn a "twist memory," stabilizing the yarn to retain its twist through years of use in your home.

Thin pads can tear, wear or disintegrate too quickly. Ultra thick pads, on the other hand, can be too soft, having a negative effect to overall carpet life.
